ON A DERIVE
Reading Response #3
“In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there. “
In response to Guy Debord’s theory of Derive, I have tried to go on a dérive to better understand the concept. I have used different ways of documenting. I have recorded part of the dérive, and used a combination of still photographs and sketches to document the various stops that I have made.
My “rule” is to turn right if I see somebody walking towards me on every 3 blocks. If not, I continue on straight. The last image here is drawn on memory; an imaginary map of my dérive.
